WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE HUNGER GAMES AND THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is the third film of The Hunger Games franchise. Mockingjay is the third book in the series but the book has been split into two separate movies (a new trend among young adult novel-to-film adaptations). The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is about Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence), who is still scarred by the events of the Quarter Quell in Catching Fire, and her decision to be the face of a rebellion of the people of Panem against the Capitol. Katniss has to make several decisions in Mockingjay that could change the whole look of the rebellion and even cost people their lives.
One thing that is weighing down on Katniss’ shoulders and has a large part of the plot of the movie is what happened to Peeta Mellark (played by Josh Hutcherson), the other winner from District 12.
Coming from someone who has not read The Hunger Games book series and does not know what happens at the end of the story, this movie was a little underwhelming in some areas. To the people that haven’t read the books and are used to the action of the first two movies, there will be a real lack of action scenes in this movie. Mockingjay had a good amount of dialogue that progresses the plot of the film, but it felt like an incomplete movie, hence the “Part 1”. It is an incomplete movie that leaves you wanting more. In the end, Mockingjay Part 1 does its job in setting up the final movie in the series. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 sets up what is to be a fantastic end to a great franchise of movies. Mockingjay Part 2…you have some big shoes to fill.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 starts Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Philip Seymour Hoffman and is in theaters now.
