‘Into the Woods’ to make debut next Friday

For this year’s spring musical, the Bishop Noll Drama Club will proudly present Into The Woods, a combination of some classic fairytales all rolled into one story. This year’s production is now in full swing as opening night is a week away, but luckily the actors, actresses and crew involved aren’t too worried.

Junior Julia Fugger, a Drama Club veteran herself, plays the role of Jack, the curious and determined young kid who gets mixed up in some mischief. “Jack is always searching for adventure.  He’s never in the here and now.  My head is always in the fantasy world that I read in my books.  We are both dreamers,” she said. “I just love theater.  I have a passion for singing and acting and Into the Woods is one of my favorite musicals.”

While the show features a cast of mostly experienced actors and actresses from the Drama Club, newcomer and senior Mary Lowry, who is one of the two actresses portraying Cinderella, wasn’t intimidated by the thought at all. “My friends that have been in Drama Club for a while really made me want to join. I was nervous, but they encouraged me to just go for it. I’ve loved it so far! I’m so excited for this production, and I love going to rehearsal and singing the songs and acting everything out onstage,” she said. “ I’ve never been in drama club before, so I think it’s going to take some time figuring out exactly how I want to portray Cinderella in a way that’s my own.”

Into the Woods intertwines a few classic fairy tales as each of the characters go on a journey into the woods to acquire what they think they wish for. The baker and his wife wish to have a child, Cinderella wishes to go to the King’s festival, and Jack wishes his best pal Milky White the cow would supply his family with milk. Along the way, these characters meet some friendly and not so friendly faces in the woods, and face some giant obstacles along the way.

“There’s a lot of great stuff in the show, between music and lines and things; I really hope people have an appreciation for the work of art that Into the Woods is when they leave. There’s so much complexity within the music, in both the vocal parts and the orchestra parts; they’re beautiful!” said Lowry.

Senior Amelia Chavez, one of the actresses portraying the witch, has similar hopes for the show. “I hope the audience laughs and enjoys the show as much as I have working on it as well. I’ve put my heart and soul into this role and I couldn’t be more proud of how far the cast and crew have gone as well.”

All three actresses agree that their characters in this production have led to an experience like no other. “The witch and I have our moments of “You know what? Doesn’t matter who’s fault it is, something has to be done.” We are very strong headed when it comes to the things that we love and we really care about people, in our own twisted way,” said Chavez of her character.

Lowry sees similarities to her character as well. “I’ve been told that I have the same attitude as Cinderella; I’m generally a really happy person who likes to sing all the time, and I like sparkly dresses. Also, I have a weird ability to identify birds and bird calls.”
Fugger also agrees, that she wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. “I wouldn’t want to forget any of it.  I became closer to old friends and met some new ones too.  It has been a blast.  It’s like a roller coaster you never want to end even though you know it has to eventually.”
