There have been a lot of movies on the tragedy of September 11th, 2001. Most people try and stray away from that topic for fear of offending viewers. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close does not look at September 11th as a day of mourning, rather a day of remembrance on the people who died and all of the good they’ have done in their lives.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close started off as a book written by Jonathan Safran Foer. The story is about a little boy whose father died on 9/11. Throughout the story, Oskar, the little boy, is searching for clues that his father left him to find clues to a game they always played. Also, Oskar is learning about his grandfather’s life and how he and his grandmother met. The book jumps around a lot, and for people who don’t like very slow beginnings, it will be hard for you to get into the book. The characters you meet in the book are Oskar, the little boy, the grandmother, Linda, Oskar’s mother, and Oskar’s grandparents, when they were younger. By the end of the book, all of the stories intertwine with one another.
While reading the book, the emotions are not expressed as much and as strongly. They are there, just not many people experience them. In the movie, however, the emotions are very powerful. You feel the sadness and hurt that the characters themselves are going through. There’s also real scenes and pictures put into the movie from the tragic day of September 11th, 2001. Audiences see how much the tragedy really affected the United States through Oskar’s story. His story is one of closure and acceptance and family: Through his journey, Oskar learns how important family truly is and he finds closure and accepts his father’s death.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a moving film about how 9/11 through the eyes of just one affected family. It definitely deserves its Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, even though it should be renamed with the title “Extremely Sad and Incredibly Depressing”. Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks (although he doesn’t have a lot of screen time) give compelling performances in a film that is both sad and heart-warming.
