Time traveling human-like alien, a spaceship in the form of a 1950s police box, cyborgs, witty humor, unstoppable action, and strong female sidekicks; what more could you want from the longest running sci-fi show?
Doctor Who is a British television show produced by BBC. The show is about a Time Lord – a time travelling alien with human attributes – known as the Doctor. The Doctor explores the universe with various companions; fighting a variety of enemies while saving people and the world itself. Doctor Who originally aired in 1963 to 1989, picking up again in 1996 for a TV movie, and again in 2005. The 2005 series is known as ‘New Who’ and is currently on its seventh season.
Currently, the Doctor is portrayed by Matt Smith, the current companions are the Ponds: Amy, Karen Gillan; and Rory, Arthur Darvill. There are a number of guest stars this season including, Mark Williams, better known as Arthur Weasley from Harry Potter; Rupert Graves, Lestrade from BBC’s Sherlock; as well as Jenna-Louise Coleman, the next companion Clara Oswin.
Doctor Who is perfect for any sci-fi lover. With a different foe every week, usually in the form of an alien or cyborg, Doctor Who never fails to bring action and adventure to the table. One of the best things about Doctor Who is that the characters don’t fall into typical stereotypes; you’ll hardly find a ‘damsel in distress’ in this show.
Season 7 kicks off with the Doctor, Amy, and Rory being captured by Daleks. They then must destroy the Asylum, a place where insane Daleks are exiled. The Doctor and the Ponds must find a way to destroy the Daleks with help from Oswin Oswald, Jenna-Louise Coleman. While Coleman is playing the new companion this season, her cameo in this episode was NOT her character’s introduction. Oswin later is revealed to be an illusioned Dalek who helps the Doctor blow up the Asylum. The season will continue in it’s usual fashion with episode 5 being the departure of the Ponds and the Christmas episode being the introduction of Clara Oswin.
It’s never too late to catch up on the show, the first six seasons are available on Netflix. The current season is airing every Saturday on BBC America at 8 pm.
