The stage was set on June 10th, 2013, as Microsoft and Sony unveiled their consoles for the 8th generation of gaming: the Xbox One and the Playstation 4.
The Xbox One was somewhat negatively received by fans and critics alike when it was first shown because of the always online functionality and the inability to play used games as well as its high price point of $499 US dollars. Microsoft rectified this soon after by removing these restrictions to appeal to the fans but the price .
On the contrary, Sony’s Playstation 4 was well received at the E3 conference as well as by fans. Most people hailed the graphics engine for the system as well as the new innovative Dualshock 4 controller. The Playstation 4 was announced to be sold for $399 US dollars making it significantly cheaper than the Xbox One.
On the day of its release, the Playstation 4 managed to sell 1 million units in North America alone while Xbox One only managed to sell 1 million units in the entire world as opposed to one region. Both systems are currently available for purchase in North America.
