Since their big comeback in February of 2013 Fall Out Boy has been go, go, go and that includes go big or go home. So much has changed for the four boys who started out in Chicago so many years ago, including a revamped sound on their comeback album, Save Rock and Roll. For die hard fans it was an almost palpable shift. Sure, our native Chicagoans kept their spectacular guitar riffs and their painfully clever lyric writing but it was a shift that came from five years hiatus. Five years of maturing and changing, and maybe we were all a little sad to lose the years of Take This To Your Grave or Infinity On High or even From Under the Cork Tree but, as a family, we were happier than ever to welcome our boys back.
Fall Out Boy’s every move has elicited excitement from it’s long standing fan base, most of whom purchased albums and concert tickets quicker than Patrick Stump can say “holy smokes!”. So on September 8th when they released a much anticipated single called Centuries, the world of Fall Out Boy pretty much exploded.
Now on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being “very mellow” and 10 being “my soul has been ignited by a song and I feel like I can climb mountains and take over a country or two”, Centuries is an 11. This song might actually transform you. To listen to this song is to go from feeble human to conqueror of nations. It is empowering and terrific, it is the essence of Fall Out Boy’s new sound. My mortal heart is almost unable to withstand the legendary sound of such an extraordinary anthem.
Maybe you don’t like Fall Out Boy, perhaps you don’t want your soul to feel as if it has been caught aflame by the torch of empowerment and unbeatable strength but in either case you’re seriously missing out. Not just because experiencing the awe-inducing range of Patrick Stump’s voice is actually similar to being reborn but also because you are missing a moment in history. This song is so excellent that it’s explosive release will be recorded in history books, it will be remembered for centuries.
