Sophomore Vanessa Salazar received a scholarship prize to the American Academy of Art in Chicago for having the best painting at the South Suburban College High School Regional Art Exhibit on Feb. 21.

According to Vanessa, the scholarship prize covers two full weeks at the program. She was surprised that she was chosen over so many people.

“I was very surprised but grateful to receive this award because I didn’t expect any type of prize for my art while going on this trip,” she said.

The project was to take a picture of arranged objects and she chose a still life painting.

Vanessa plans on going to the program she has received from the scholarship prize.

“I definitely plan on going to this program as it’s a great opportunity to learn more about art and also because I love the city of Chicago,” she explained.

Vanessa considers art as a hobby and would like to pursue something else in college.

“For me, art is just a hobby that I love doing but I plan on taking different art classes throughout the rest of high school,” she said.
