US District Judge Edmond E. Chang ruled on Monday, Jan. 6th, 2014, that Chicago’s ban on the the sale of firearms was unconstitutional because it violated the freedoms of the citizens that were provided by the 2nd Amendment, which allows all citizens the right to bear arms. Chang stated that the government is obligated to protect a person’s constitutional rights including the right to possess and bear arms. This is only the most recent attack on Chicago’s strict laws on gun control. Just last year, Illinois legislators were forced to adopt a law that allowed citizens to carry concealed weapons.
Gun control is a very controversial issue and many people find Chicago’s ban on the sales of firearms unconstitutional and unreasonable. Chicago gun collector Kenneth Pacholski stated in a Jan. 7 Associated Press article that the law was irrational, saying, “All the people I know who own guns are really careful.”
Last year, Chicago had more gun related homicides than any city in the nation.
