Crown Point’s newest hangout is truly worth the half hour drive my team and I took to check it out. Chemshaw 13 Donuts & Comics is located at 1385 Main Street, in Crown Point, IN. The shop is located in a small town that smells divine due to all the restaurants that surround it. The shop itself smells amazing; all the different donut scents really wake up your nose. With a comic/television show decor due to all the superhero art on the walls and the television/movies references, the shop is so much more detailed than most comic book shops. For example, the bathrooms are the Doctor Who doors from the popular show, and the comic book room is housed in an old bank vault from a 1920s bank that stood there long ago. In an interesting twist of preserving the old history of the Crown Point building with new pop culture, cartoon icons like Homer Simpson line the archaic walls in ceramic mug form.
Lynette Pisano-Sullivan (the owner) said she chose Crown Point as the location of the shop because of the beautiful courthouse across the street. According to Pisano-Sullivan, this was the whole reason that she and her husband Jason Sullivan moved to Crown Point in the first place.
As for the donut-comic combination of the shop, Pisano-Sullivan knew the needs of her audience.
“My husband and I did research to find out what gamers liked and since I had a baking history it all worked out,” she said.
The donuts, which give the shop their namesake, are delicious. One of their more popular donuts is the Homer Donut with pink frosting and sprinkles that pops up in nearly every episode of The Simpsons.
The shop does not have that wide of a variety of comics at the moment, but there plan is to expand their inventory. The comic vault has rare and current comics in it, as well as rare comic-themed items that collectors would love to get their hands on. Currently, the second level of the store is in construction, but Pisano-Sullivans plans to turn it into a library and a place for role-playing games.
My team and I loved the shop and the attentive staff made the place seem so homey; it also helped that they have a flat screen that plays comic-themed movies like “The Avengers”.
My team and I are already making plans to visit this wonderful establishment again soon. I highly recommend this shop to any comic or donut lovers out there.
