The girls basketball team is ready to hit the court and begin a new season with a lot of promise and expectations on their shoulders. The Lady Warriors are coming off of a very exciting season from the previous year. Head coach Vanita Gary led the ladies to a final record of 21 wins and 3 losses.
The girls were also capable of bringing home many trophies throughout last year’s season on their quest for a sectional title. The Lady Warriors were able to bring home a regular season conference plaque, a conference tournament championship trophy and plaque, and still keep the Greater South Shore Conference game ball, which was originally held by the Wheeler Bearcats.
The Lady Warriors are looking to be ranked as one of the top teams in the region, win their conference and come out on top in their sectional.
“Because of our success this past season, I expect us to continue to get better and come together as a team,” Sobilo said.
Sobilo has all the belief in the world that the Lady Warriors will have another winning season because of all the talent that will be returning to the team this year. The Lady Warriors graduated no seniors in their previous year and are returning a lot of talented, experienced basketball players to their team for the 2013-2014 season.
“Last season we had no seniors, so our entire team will be returning,” Sobilo said. “This will help us because we have all played together as a team and do not have any spots to fill.”
Some key players that will be filling the leadership role for the Lady Warriors that will be returning this year are seniors Elena Sobilo and Asya Hobbs. But not only will the seniors be playing a huge role in the 2013-2014 basketball season, but the underclassmen will, too. Sophomores Tori Keilman, Brenda Pennington, and Naomi House are ready to continue their roles as high scorers and rebounders.
“Over the off season, I have been doing many things to improve my game and stay in basketball shape for the upcoming season,” House said. “I have been running, doing agility workouts, and working on some basic basketball drills to improve on ball handling and shooting.”
The Lady Warriors know that they have a target on their back and will be a team that every school that they play will circle their name on their schedule. Every team that the Lady Warriors play will be out to get them this season and hand them a loss.
“We don’t know how teams have improved over the summer, so we need to be ready for everyone,” Sobilo said. “Whiting will be ready to play us because of us beating them twice, but them beating us in the Sectional Championship. We are ready to have another successful basketball season and I can’t wait for it to begin.”
