The Lady Warriors hosted this year’s sectional tournament beginning Tuesday, Oct. 21. Three smooth victories led them to a championship over the Whiting Oilers. Tuesday’s regional win against host school Winamac brings the Warriors to another semi-state game, which they will play in Bremen on Saturday.
The Warriors were the favored team in their sectional. They drew Bowman Academy in the first round of sectionals where they defeated the Eagles in three games. The Warriors first challenge in the state tournament wasn’t Bowman Academy, but was the Whiting Oilers in the sectional championship where they also defeated the Oilers in three games.
“I think Whiting was our biggest competition because they have always been our rivals in every sport,” said junior libero Delaney Soto.
Soto was not the only player to agree that the Oilers will be the Warriors biggest competition. Sophomore setter Brittany Anderson also agreed.
“I also think the Oilers were our biggest competition because they held the next best record in our sectional,” she said.
Both Anderson and Soto are not looking to stop after winning the regional championship, but the two returning players are eager to make it to the State championship in hope for a better outcome than last year’s.
“Providence has the Warriors coming for them and this time, things will be different,” said team captain Carly Cappello, senior.
The Warriors volleyball team swept sectionals last year along with regionals and semi-state, leading them all the way to the state finals where they battled against Providence. The Warriors lost in three games to a very experienced Providence team.
