Bishop Noll is happy to bring back hockey. Noll has not seen a hockey team since 2002, until this year.
Former Noll player Richard Sobilo, who also played hockey for the University of Notre Dame and is currently the head softball coach, will take the reigns as head hockey coach once again. Assisting Sobilo are coaches Tom Stibich, Joe Etter, and Jeff Cipowski.
This new hockey team is not entirely made up of students from Noll, around 70% are Noll students. Other students come from Lake Central, Chicago Washington, and Whiting as of right now.
“We need to balance our newer players with experienced players to be competitive,” Sobilo said.
He also says that their main goal this season is just to get the program on its feet.
“We want to create a program where players can compete at the varsity level, if not by the next season, definitely by the season after that,” Sobilo said.
Currently, the team consists of four freshmen, two sophomores, four juniors and six seniors. Sophomore Raleigh Vis has been playing hockey for three years with Munster on the Junior Varsity and Varsity level. When Raleigh plays varsity, his positions are on the wings or center. Raleigh says he sees Alex Sobilo and Andrew Galgan as strong players as well.
“I’m looking forward to hockey season because it is the best time of the year, and I love fall due to the start up of the season,” Vis said.
“I look forward to our players improving, we have already seen great improvement over the summer.” says Coach Sobilo. “I have numerous players in the past who have developed into very good hockey players who have never played until they signed up at Bishop Noll.”
