Bishop Noll Institute basketball is known for its region dominance. Over the last few years, Noll has been privileged to have dominant high school players such as Dean Danos and Adonis Filer. This year however, Coach Belluomini and the Warriors were faced with a slightly different situation.
Entering the 2015 basketball season, the warriors did not have the same dominant team as they usually do. With the loss of the teams centerpiece Larry Crisler, the team would have to work together as a team if it wanted to have a productive season. The Warriors did not play as a team early on. With losses to mediocre teams such as River Forest and Whiting, Bishop Noll was spiraling into what looked to be a lost season. The team ended their regular season with a record of 10-13.
At the start of the post season, the warriors were not favored to move on very far. The team played together as a team however and won sectionals by defeating Hebron 67-47. That is the game when you could clearly see, there may be something special developing. The Warriors then moved on to regionals where they faced a tough team in Fort Wayne Canterbury. The Warriors were underdogs and had many doubters but they ended up pulling out a victory. This victory opened the eyes of the Bishop Noll community because with that win, this team that was once viewed as mediocre, was headed to semi- state! The regional championship game was packed as the Warriors were looking to win their first regional championship since the 2010-2011 season. The team entered the game as underdogs yet again. This was an identity that the team started to accept and use to their advantage. The Warriors pulled off a win in a close game against Laville to win the Regional Championship.
With this win the Warriors advanced to Semi State to play a highly touted Frankton team. The Warriors went into the game in a familiar way, as underdogs. Bishop Noll played the Frankton Eagles tough but at the end they fell short of advancing to state. Even though the team did not advance, they still made impressive strides as a team and as a family. The future of Bishop Noll basketball will continue to be bright if the team plays together and learns from the underdog warrior team of 2015 that proved the region wrong.
