Girls Basketball off to a rocky start

Injuries cause girls’ team minor setbacks in the season

The Bishop Noll Lady Warriors basketball team officially started their season on Nov. 10, in a game against Highland. Since then, the team has had a rough start. With the loss of some players and attaining minor injuries, the girls are currently 2-5, although they aren’t allowing any obstacles get them down.

“So far, this season has been a learning experience. We have a tough schedule and we are only getting better from these games. We’re improving day by day,” said senior Erin Mullaney.

Despite multiple players suffering minor injuries in the beginning of the season, the team isn’t letting it get in the way of a successful season.

Junior Isabel Vazquez is staying optimistic.

“The injuries caught us off guard and of course we did not want them to happen, but it did not ruin us,” she said. “It has just opened up opportunities for younger people to step up and only makes us stronger, because once they come back those young players could come in future games when we need them, with more confidence.”

However, the team has been playing to their strengths as well.

“Our strengths as a team is that we are quick. Because we are not taller than most teams we have to push the ball often and get transition points. Our defense is tough and that is going to help us win games,” said senior Cynthia Melero.

Although the season is already in full swing, the team is still looking for ways to improve.

“Our teams goals are to work together through all the hardships and not have them get the best of us. I believe that our team can make it far as we did last year and hopefully we go further this year,” Melero said.

Mullaney is confident in her team and it’s players.

“We have great talent on our team and everyone contributes,” she said. “We are very good at running the floor and getting transition baskets. We have great team chemistry on and off the court.”

The girls play on Friday, Dec. 18 against Wheeler at 7 p.m at home.
