Bishop Noll’s boys swim team competed at the Boys Sectionals Prelims on February 16th at Munster High School. They competed against 13 different schools: Crown Point, East Chicago Central, Gary West Side, Griffith, Hammond Central, Hammond Morton, Highland, Lake Central, Lowell, Munster, North Newton, Rensselaer Central, South Newton.

Despite the team only having 5 guys in total, they competed well with all their relays and 2 individual events advancing to the sectional finals round that takes place on Saturday.

Kubon competed in the 200 individual medley and 100 fly at the sectionals preliminary meet. He placed within the top 16 for both events and will be competing in the finals round.  Along with Kubon placing well, Senior Luke Buksa is a first alternate for the 100 m backstroke. In his 3 years of being on the swim team, this was his highest placement in sectionals. He swam a personal best of 1:14, dropping 6 seconds off his previous pr. Buksa said he was surprised he placed that high. “I was surprised that I did that well, but I’m happy I did. The effort and  hard work I’ve been putting into practices definitely paid off.”

Besides individual placements, the team also qualified in all their relay events. Sophomores Rafael Garcia Soto, Max Kubon,  Brandon Jimenez and seniors Luke Buksa and Jacob Suarez will be competing in the sectional finals for the 200m and 400m freestyle relay.

Head coach Jackie Lelo is very proud of the team’s performance. In her 3 years of  coaching, she has seen great amounts of success from the swimmers. “I’m very proud of them, they all competed very well. I’m looking forward to seeing how they place at the meet on Saturday.”

The team will be competing at the sectional finals on February 18th at Munster High School at 9am.
