Many high school seniors are graduating soon. Some will go to a college, university, trade school, backpack through Europe or take a year off…and some will join the military. Joining the military is not for everyone and neither is college.
“Times are hard and it is a job with good benefits,” says senior and enlisted Marine corps Nick Skurka.
Joining the military used to just be an excuse for people who did not want to go to college or who did not get into college. Now, more people are enlisting to take some time off of school, find themselves and to take this opportunity and make the most out of it.
Four Bishop Noll seniors have said “yes” to Uncle Sam’s propaganda poster, the highly publicized “I want you”. Each of their stories are different and their paths will be difficult but these four courageous seniors are the future of the soldiers who will fight for our country. These four Warriors have different branches that they are going into. Anthony Guttierez and Brooke Ellis will soon be soldiers in the Army. In the fall, Brooke will attend Purdue West Lafayette and enter ROTC.
“It is a reserve officer training corps and it trains prospective students to become officers in the armed forces,” says Brooke.
Nick Skurka chose the United States Marine Corps because he feels, “they are the best of the best. The Marines are the first ones in and the last ones out.”
Zach Machuca will be going to Texas after graduation to be in the Air Force.
The military not only gives you an opportunity to have a job straight out of high school it also gives you certain training and inside opportunities to go to school and further your education. Going to college is not for everyone and neither is the military but having another option is starting to prove very helpful for many different people.
