After qualifying for State last year, the
Envirothon club will return to tackle this year’s topic: farmers markets/locally-grown food.
The Envirothon is a competition in which Indiana students learn about parts of the environment. Students will listen to lec- tures about Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife, Soils, and a Current Events topic. There is a regional meet in LaPorte County and a statewide event if your team quali- fies in regionals. The first competition takes place in March.
“Basically, the Envirothon aims to teach young people about practical applications of environmental science, and also about respect for (and proper use of) the resourc- es of which we are stewards,” senior Nick
Anglin said.
After last year’s second place win and four
graduating seniors, lone returning member Anglin is ready to recruit new members and begin preparation for the new compe- tition.
“This past year it was sustainable range and pasture management, for which we had to study the differences between rangeland and pasture land, as well as the various uses to which each can be put (including but not limited to grazing). We won second place. I was surprised, and I think everyone else was as well.”
