As the lights gleamed down, then-freshmen Mya and Michelle Harvey took the stage. After already performing in Noll’s ensemble marching and jazz bands, the pair finally had a chance to shine at the annual talent show. Their connection was immediately recognized as soon as they began performing the popular song, “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri. Their harmony intertwined well–perhaps because the pair are twins, and gifted ones at that.
“To be honest we have no idea if we are identical! I feel like we are fraternal, “ Mya said.
Though the pair are not fully aware of the degree of their closeness, the connection is still there and going strong. They work well together, meshing their combined skills into one fluid piece of music. However, the pair are unique in just what it is they bring to the musical table.
Mya plays the clarinet, tenor saxophone, drums, and the piano. Michele plays the piano, drums, and some guitar. Each has their one specialty, however. For Mya, it is the clarinet. For Michele, it is the piano. The pair first entered the world of music when their parents sent them to a performing arts middle school. There, they started to pick up on different sets of skills, with their family encouraging them along the way.
“They also let my sister and I play our instruments as loud as we want, whenever we want,” Mya explained.
The sophomore twins plan to continue performing together, particularly at the next school talent show. They also will keep playing in Noll’s award-winning band. They both are already setting their sights on the future and are looking forward to growing their capabilities far after high school.
“I plan to just keep learning my craft and get a scholarship dealing with music,” said Michele.
One might assume that twins would get tired of each other’s company and wish to break out on their own. That is not the case with the Harveys. They are often each other’s greatest motivators and biggest fans. Mya and Michele both admit to giving each other pep talks to settle nerves before performances.
Perhaps the easy-going nature of the duo comes from their differences; they may be similar in many ways but can stand on their own musically. Mya is able to hear the music by ear and know which notes to play, while Michele has the skill of easily reading music and then performing it, along with the ability to improvise.
The twins are not solely involved in music and band, however. One can often find them working together on many other activities.
“We like to freestyle rap and act, and we play tennis,” Michele said.
