The theme for the 2014 Academic Super Bowl is “The West”, dealing with the time period of Colonial Times to the 1920s. Led by Mr. Tutacko coaching Social Studies, Mr. Miller coaching math, Mr. Carioto coaching fine arts, and Mrs. McGuire coaching English, the team of sophomores, juniors and seniors will compete at Wheeler High School on April 22. If they should make it to the state finals, the team will travel to Purdue University on May 10.
“This year we have so many signed up, and that it is a nice problem to have because in recent years students were begged to join,” Tutacko said.
However, the coaches will have to make cuts in March to fully have the teams figured out. Bishop Noll is allowed 30 students, but only allowed 5 students per team. Once the teams are set, the coaches have been given a basic outline and what percentage of each subject is used to help form practice with the students. Many of the coaches use the internet as a main source of practice. The history team uses old textbooks, and the math team practices problems with a maximum time of 20 seconds.
“Our biggest challenges are Hanover Central and Wheeler H.S., the host school,” Tutacko said.
Although the team has many months to prepare, they looks to bring home a ribbon and hopefully receive a high enough score to reach the finals at Purdue University. The team will have to study hard especially for the final round in the competition which will encompass all 5 subjects.
