All the problems with schedules at the beginning of the year can be traced back to the implementation of the new program that combines the grading system, finance system and scheduling system, according to the guidance department. The guidance department members are just beginning to understand how to use it and want to remind students that this will not be a repetitive experience.
“Learning a new system is difficult, especially one with so many details. Each year, there are some classes that do not fit into schedules though, and this year was no different. We make sure that each student has the classes that they need, and do our best to fit in the electives that they request around those important classes,” says Ms. Michele Arnold, director of guidance.
This multi-unit software program includes Blackbaud, the gradebook program, and Education Edge, which the guidance department uses for student information, grades and scheduling. It also includes Financial Edge for the Finance Dept. and Razor’s Edge for our Development Office.
The change in software was much-needed, according to Arnold.
“We were having some difficulties with the way our previous system was calculating GPA’s. The new system also stores much more information than the old system did,” Arnold said.
The staff will continue to learn the new system, so that by second semester, the kinks should be worked out.
“We should have a good handle on working with it and making adjustments so that scheduling goes more smoothly,” Arnold said.
The issues that caused problems with scheduling this year mostly came from trial and error.
“Learning a new system is difficult, especially one with so many details,” Arnold said. “Each year, there are some classes that do not fit into schedules though, and this year was no different. We make sure that each student has the classes that they need, and do our best to fit in the electives that they request around those important classes.”
Additionally, new course offerings added to the system may have caused scheduling conflicts.
This year, they’ve added DC Chem, Intro to Chem/Phys, Honors Band, Calculus (regular level), and Finite Math. Student requests make a large impact on what is offered, so be sure to make your needs known.
