Sophomore Emily Rojas has been granted a scholarship to attend the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp located in Twin Lake, Michigan for two weeks in July. South Suburban College is funding her tuition that is worth $1,235.
After performing at South Suburban College’s band competition this spring, Emily was told by band instructor Mr. Rocco Carioto that she had been given a scholarship to the prestigious fine arts camp. Her ability to play multiple instruments in one performance impressed the judges.
The Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp is a summer school for the arts. They work to help improve young musicians and dancers etc. Emily will be learning to interpret her music and musical instruments better, specifically jazz.
She has been in band since freshman year, but music isn’t new to her. Emily has three instruments she will be taking with her. She has been playing the trombone for a year and a half, the guitar for two years, and the bass guitar for one year. She hopes to alternate between all three at the camp. If alternating instruments doesn’t work out, she hopes to just focus on the guitar.
“There’s still so much to learn on it,” Emily says.
While attending this camp for two weeks, Emily expects to learn a lot about music and the way it works.
“I would like to gain a better understanding of my instrument, how to read my music better, understand rhythms and the types of musical techniques I could use,” she says.
Watching her now in school and after school always practicing her instruments, the passion is obvious. Emily wants to attend Columbia College in Chicago. Even though she doesn’t want to major in music at Columbia, playing for the college’s band is definitely in the cards, she is also considering it as a minor.
