Junior Varsity: junior-heavy girls golf team brings new interest to sport

A new meaning to the term “junior varsity” could be applied to the varsity girls golf team. The junior-heavy team has 7 girls racking up points for Noll at each match. And although most of the golfers are new to the sport, the  team is improving more and more each year, according to junior Jailynn Thomas.

“All of us have gotten to the point where we constantly strive to get better,” she says.

With Jailynn leading the team as the returning captain and scorer, there’s Erica Campos that is also constantly leading by example and has impacted the team in a positive way.

“Out of all the people on my team, in my eyes, she has the most drive and the most enthusiasm when it comes to being a better golfer,” Jailynn says. “She always has a smile on her face, and she is always ready for whatever happens when it comes to tournaments.”

They all love to play the game and have a different positive attitude that they bring to the team. Senior Andrea Delgado and junior Erica Campos are the peacemakers of the team and always have a smile on their faces. Junior Rachel Carlassare is the encouraging one that is always complimenting everyone on their good days or even their bad one, while junior Maggie Dominiak is the goofy one that always has a joke or story to tell to make herself and the team laugh.

The girls’ regular season came to an end at the Lake Central sectional match on Sept. 18 when the Noll placed 7th. Jailynn says this was the toughest match because they competed against top-tier teams like Lake Central, Boone Grove, Munster, and Andrean all at once.

Thomas shot a 96 to qualify for regionals for her third straight year. She shot a 95 this past Saturday at the Lafayette Jefferson regional.
