The 45th presidential inauguration brings many mixed feelings among the public both young and old. However, many people are expected to attend this inauguration, some with feelings of hope and optimism. Bishop Noll senior Liliana Mendez, was selected for the opportunity to attend such a momentous event.

Mendez was selected for the trip to Washington D.C. through her participation in the National Youth Leadership Forum: Medicine. While in D.C., she will also be able to attend the Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit, which is a five day program in where  attendees get a chance to learn more about the history of the electoral process and traditions that come with the inauguration. “We are scheduled to listen to speakers such as Malala, Gen. Colin Powell, Spike Lee, etc. we will also be presenting ideas for change on some of the biggest concerns for the US. Our ideas will be presented to the president and select members of Congress,” Mendez said.

She too is nervous about the upcoming president’s term, but Mendez is trying to maintain an optimistic outlook. “[I hope] That he is able to improve US relations and standing around the world and take the summits ideas into effect,” she said.

Although it was a large honor to be selected for the trip, it did not come without obstacles. When Mendez first found out about the opportunity, she knew right away that there would be obstacles ahead of her. “When I first received my invasion to attend my family realized that we would be unable to pay for the program. The biggest obstacle was definitely the financial cost to attend. Some did not believe that I would be able to raise all the funds necessary,” she said. Despite knowing this, Mendez tackled the challenges head on, and took initiative immediately. “I fundraised by writing dozens of sponsorship request letters to business owners, politicians, political organizations and more. After time, I was able to establish connections with local leaders who were able to help me obtain more sponsorships.”
Mendez was able to successfully go on her trip, due to a lot of dedication and fundraising. Despite the many obstacles in her way, she remained excited for the trip. “I was completely shocked when I first found out about this amazing opportunity. When I saw the packet in the mail I was very excited and before long I was extremely nervous about how I was going to not only pay for the trip but also how I would leave during school year and miss my classes,” she said. “Being able to participate in this program  is something I will remember forever and could never regret.”
