Are you in the multicultural club? If not, join!

The club meets every Monday in room 205 from 3-3:30. During regular meetings, the club plans and prepares for larger club events and field trips.

The club’s first outing was to the Mexican Fine Arts Museum in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago on Oct. 28.

“Students will get a chance to see the ofrendas (altars) created for el Día de los Muertos,” said Ms. Samantha Chapleau, English teacher and multicultural club sponsor, who has taken on the role of sponsor after Ms. Jessica Omelanczuk stepped down. “The museum had incredible textile exhibits and an exhibit on the art of Frida Kahlo.”

Currently, there are 30 students signed up for the club, but only 10-15 students participate in activities.

“We plan to offer a wide variety of activities this year,” Chapleau said. “So far, we have had a Bollywood Movie Night as well as sponsored the Night of Latin Culture.”

Upcoming events include a student presentation about a study abroad experience in Argentina and Christmas-Around-The-World. Field trip options include a World Religions trip in January, a trip to the African-American History Museum in Chicago in February, Irish music trip in March, and a Capstone Multicultural Night in April.

“The overall goal of Multicultural Club for this year is to help our own diverse student population appreciate its diversity. In addition, I hope students will learn a little bit more about unfamiliar cultures and come to an appreciation of them, as well,” Chapleau said.
