The Indiana Academic standards have been updated after moving away from the Common Core and will be compliant before July 1, 2014. These new state standards are specifically preparing students for college readiness in Mathematics and Language Arts. “They both emphasize problem solving and applying math to real life situations. The new standards have more of a focus on career readiness” said Mr. Miller about the new state standards. The board voted 10 to 1 on replacing the old Indiana state standards. In 2010 Indiana adopted the common core program, but because of inadequate local input, Indiana has been the first state to drop the common core standards.
“Honestly, I don’t feel that the new state standards and Common Core are that different. They provide specific content that should be covered in each course” said Mr. Mark Miller, math teacher.
Some teachers might have to change their lessons plans completely or just make some little readjustments.
“Going forward, my lesson plans will not need to change much, I tend to emphasize problem solving and build real-life examples into my lessons as much as I can,” Miller said.
