On November 2 Bishop Noll’s first year Spell Bowl team competed in their first tournament. Ten members out of 17 attended the first tournament at Lowell High School. With this being new to many of the members of the team, it is also new for first year coach Mr. Kevin Burgun.

“My goal for each member is the same, be a better speller than you were when the season started. If we experience growth then we have had a successful season,” Burgun said.

Burgun wants each and everyone of the members to improve this season, as he knows this is new to a lot of them including himself.

“The first year of coaching anything is hard in that you just don’t have the experience. I have a book that outlines the tournament, but I’ve never truly experienced it,” he said.

Experience  is the biggest challenge for the first year coach, as well a his team. However, for his team to have success Burgun said that the team just needs to be able to to get used to the distractions that they may be faced with whether it be the crowds, or anything. If they spell well and manage the distractions, Burgun believes this team can achieve success.  Results of the tournament were not posted at the time of publication.
