Study body raises money for fellow student in hospital
December 18, 2017
On November 16, the student body held a fundraiser for Jelah Winfield, a Bishop Noll junior who had pressure on her brain which caused her to enter a comatose state, in order to raise money for her medical bills. $870 was raised.
Organized by juniors Chantale and Chandler Leavell, the sock hop fundraiser was held in the cafeteria during Student Resource Time and brought more than 200 students in attendance.
“Initially due to the turnout for the prayer service held for Jelah in October, we personally weren’t expecting a huge turnout. We expected 100 or even a little less than that,” Chandler said. “We’re really thankful for all who bought tickets and supported.”
Students were able to purchase soda and snacks at the event, and music was provided by Senior Julian “DJ Drip” Leal.
The money is going to medical bills and whatever expenses Jelah’s mother needs in order to take care of Jelah financially.
“It shows Jelah that we are supportive of her and that even though she isn’t here with us everyday at school,” Chantale said. She’s still on our minds and hearts and she isn’t alone. We loved Jelah before she became sick and we will continue loving her and being there for her.”
The school received news on Friday, Nov. 24 that Jelah was released from the hospital would continue to recover at home.
