Freshmen grapple with challenges of new semester

As the second semester starts, freshmen have to adapt to new classes, teachers, and schedules.

After a semester of being in the school building full time, many freshmen found themselves in a new challenge as they had to adapt to the maturity of a high school student. This semester, the guidance department is working with the freshman class to ensure success for them.

“My classes aren’t too difficult to adjust to, as all of my classes have at least a couple friends in them,” said freshman Martin Rodriguez-Alvarez. “The only part to get adjusted to is in my new classes is what they are learning if they are ahead of me.”

Sebastian Zuwala has several new classes this semester and is acclimating well.

“I like my new classes. They it is are pretty fun, with the new teachers and having new people in my class,” he said..”

“I think it is great idea to change classes every semester as everybody gets to experience the different learning styles of other teachers.” said Zuwala.

Mrs. Mayra Quiroz, guidance counselor, has been meeting with freshmen regularly and has some advice for them if they want a successful second semester.

“I encourage the Class of 2025 to set academic goals for themselves.  This sets the tone to be productive. Next, set the tone to be positive.  Look inward,” she said.” “When you cannot control what is happening around you, you must reflect and find peace, security, and faith within.  At Bishop Noll, we begin our day with prayer.  Every morning, our students have a moment to reflect and seek the Lord. When you cannot control what is happening around you, you must reflect and find peace, security, and faith within.  At Bishop Noll, we begin our day with prayer.  Every morning, our students have a moment to reflect and seek the Lord.”

Quiroz noted that the biggest challenge with this class was that they had to navigate the transition of returning form virtual education.

“Our Class of 2025 are the ‘”come back kids.’”  They are learning how to be successful after many months of virtual learning and unpredictable challenges,” she said..  “I believe this class has developed a resilience which demonstrates that students can overcome obstacles and be victorious..“ “To offer some helpful tips on what Freshmen can do this upcoming month to stay on track.”
